Side Hustles

My Honest Experience with Mystery Shopping (+ How You Can Start Too!)

If you’ve ever wished you could get paid to eat out, shop, or try new services, mystery shopping might be right up your alley. I started learning about it a few months ago, and it’s become one of my favorite side hustles — both fun and surprisingly rewarding!

What Is Mystery Shopping?

Mystery shopping is when companies hire everyday consumers (like you and me) to evaluate their products, customer service, or overall experience. Brands want to know what their customers actually think — not just what employees report — so they use mystery shoppers to give honest, detailed feedback from a real customer’s perspective.

It’s a win-win: businesses improve their service, and you get paid (or reimbursed) for completing assignments that often involve shopping, dining, or testing services.

How the Process Works

The process is simple once you get the hang of it:

  1. Browse Available Jobs – Each mystery shopping platform lists available assignments. You can read through the job details, like what’s expected, the location, and how much it pays or reimburses.
  2. Apply or Self-Assign – Some jobs you can grab instantly, while others require an application and approval.
  3. Complete the Shop – Once assigned, you’ll follow the instructions: visit the location, make any required purchases, and take notes (sometimes photos too).
  4. Submit Your Report – Afterward, you’ll fill out a report — usually a short multiple-choice survey with a few written sections describing your experience.
  5. Get Paid! – Payments are typically sent via PayPal. How often you get paid depends on the company — some process payments every two weeks, others monthly or bi-monthly.

How I Got Started

I actually learned everything from a course that walks you through exactly how to start mystery shopping safely (and avoid scams). The course includes a huge list of verified mystery shopping companies — over 70 for the U.S., plus 22 for Canada, 15 for Europe/UK, and 11 for international shoppers (Australia, Mexico, UAE, Asia, etc.).

Having that list alone is worth it — I felt confident applying, knowing I wasn’t falling for any fake “get paid to shop” schemes floating around online.

What I’ve Earned So Far

In my first three months, I’ve received over $500 worth of reimbursed food and services, plus over $300 in direct payments — so more than $800 in total value! It’s been a great mix of fun experiences (free meals and oil changes, anyone?) and some nice extra income on the side.

Some shoppers even get entire vacations paid for through mystery shopping — that’s a big dream of mine, but I’m starting small and gaining experience one shop at a time.

Why I Recommend It

If you’re looking for a side hustle that’s flexible, fun, and gives you real experiences instead of just screen time, mystery shopping is a great choice. You can start small, fit it around your schedule, and gradually build up to bigger, better-paying shops as you gain experience.

If you want to get started the safe way, here’s the course I took — it’s full of legitimate resources that’ll get you earning in no time.
